We have our last meeting of 2005 at Laleham on 13th Dec and I am sure it will be one of the best turn outs of the year. With a reduction in membership over the last couple of years it has sometimes been difficult to get a large group together for the day meetings. Thanks to all of you that have turned up to play and to keep the section going. Lets hope that next year our numbers do not drop any more. Nevertheless we have enjoyed some new courses: Flackwell Heath and Hartley Wintney and gone back to Windlesham after a couple of years absence. Some very good golf was still played at all the events: notably by Lee Carpenter and Cedric D'Cruz at Hartley Wintney where they scored 42 and 41 points respectively. There was also a hole in one by Stuart Herdman who became the first holder of the new trophy which we introduced this year. Throughout the year John Derebello has played very well and has seen his handicap come down significantly. Well done. Unfortunately we have still seen some very slow play and this must be improved for the benefit of all. This has probably been said over and over again but when playing Stableford, if you cant score please pick up. I had to have surgery on my knee in June which meant that Richard Croxford had to stand in for me at Betchworth, which gave him some early practice for his own year as captain in 2006. I wish him all the best and hope he has a successful year. Special thanks also to Peter Safranek. Without Peter our match with the Czech Republic team Karlstejn Golf Club would be impossible. Peter not only helps to sort out the e-mail language problems but, even though he does not play in the match, is also always there at the golf club assisting in whatever way he can. My thanks also go to all the Committee members for their assistance throughout the year. After certain of them decided to give up golf after some bad games it was nice to see them come back for more punishment. Finally thanks to Jim Griffiths for all he has done to give the golf section an excellent web site. It is a pity that recently there have been problems caused by BA Clubs in getting information onto the web site and we hope that these will be sorted out for the coming year. It only remains for me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Les Sibley ***************************************************** The 2006 AGM will be held at the Concorde Club on Tuesday 7th February at 1900. Please try to attend so that you can have your say in how the section is run and share a drink and snack with the committee afterwards. ***************************************************** Ello John got a new driver? As most of you will know new rules concerning Drivers will come into force on 1st January 2008. To check out the list of conforming clubs you can now go to HYPERLINK "http://www.randa.org" www.randa.org and look up Rules, Equipment and Driving Clubs Day Meetings 2005 Flackwell Heath Wednesday 23rd March The first Day Meeting of the year and , although March can bring some inclement weather, we were blessed with some sun and a reasonably warm day. The course was in very good condition and the greens were excellent for March. Unless you were a very long hitter there were many blind shots to the green but this probably added to the interest. With my first tee shot going about 100 yards I thought it was going to be a bad day, but things did improve. John DeRebello obviously enjoyed his game as he came in with 39 points to win the day. Big hitting Dave Fielding was second with 38 and one of our steadiest golfers Nigel Finch came in third only one point behind on 37. Nice to see Dave keeping out of the trees! (Les Sibley) Mill Ride Monday 11th April The course was in fairly good condition with excellent fairways but just a few problems with the greens due to tyning in previous weeks. A day of sunshine and there were many red faces to prove it. Only 29 golfers taking part but good to see some ex members joining us again and some new faces. John DeRebello was the morning winner with an excellent 38 points which was his second day meeting win and duly attracted the attention of our Handicap Secretary. The afternoon team competition was a Welsh Stableford and .Dave Skiggs followed up 3rd place in the morning by assisting his team of Les Sibley and Bernie Forbes to win with a lower than expected winning score of 77. Unlike last year the nearest the pins passed with no lost or missing markers what a surprise! (Les Sibley) Reading Tuesday 3rd May This was the ASCA qualifier, made even more of a challenge by some bare patches on the greens, vicious rough and wind, rain and sunshine in about equal measure. The days Stableford competition was won by captain Les Sibley who led us round on a single-seater buggy (due to a torn cartilage in his knee) obviously didnt harm his swing. Mr Consistent, Dave Skiggs had another good day at Reading, storming back after a poor morning round to win the overall scratch competition. Nigel Finch, also played very well, only just losing out to Dave on countback. Best morning score was Stan Knollman with 37 points and in the afternoon newcomer Nick Dodd with 36 points. The 3 ASCA qualifiers were Dave Skiggs, Nigel Finch and Nigel Weldon. (Unfortunately due to the high costs and travel difficulties we could not send a team to the ASCA in Iceland) (Jim Griffiths)Hartley Wintney Tuesday 14th June This was a new course to us with plenty of trees and water hazards set in the beautiful North Hampshire countryside. Conditions were almost perfect and resulted in some impressive scoring in the Morning Stableford competition. Cedric D'Cruz had an excellent round scoring 41 points but was pushed into 2nd place by Lee Carpenter with 42 . The afternoon competition was a Dubai Stableford, which was won by Stan Brown Clive Heathcote and Geoff Manning. (David Burton) Betchworth (Pairs) Thursday 14th July A glorious day at Betchworth for the pairs and the course as always in excellent condition. Richard Croxford was acting captain whilst Les was recovering from his operation and presided over our best turn-out of the year . There were however one or two late arrivals due to the M25 traffic but it didnt seem to bother Nigel Finch as he Mick Baylie won the morning competition with 49 points. The afternoon went to Malcolm Coleman and Gary Tunnell with 47 points but overall Iain Jago and Danny Harnedy completed a comprehensive victory gaining more points than the AM and PM winners combined. Windlesham Monday 15th August The Windlesham course was in very good condition but the undulating greens were a challenge to even the best putters. With plenty of sunshine it was a perfect day for golf and the morning event was very closely contested with Ray Harpur, having home course advantage, and Les Sibley both finishing on 38 points but being pipped by David Fielding and Roger Woof on 39 points. Roger winning on countback. The afternoon competition was Monte Carlo based on the yellow ball format where scores are multiplied together. High totals were expected and duly arrived. Last years winners had 152 points. This year Gary Tunnell, Jeff Thomas and Roger Woof came in with 178. (Jim Griffiths) Pyrford Monday 5th September This event was originally booked at Oak Park but due to problems with treatment on their greens we were offered Pyrford which was an unexpected treat. Again the sun shone all day and some very good golf was played on a very tricky course with water hazards on 17 holes and a continuous sandy beach bunker from tee to green on the other. Three players scored over 40 points but Gary Tunnell was the worthy winner, two points clear with 45. In the afternoon there was a team Stableford competition which was won by Nigel Weldon, Richard Peet and Daniel Barrett with a creditable total of 106 points. (David Burton) Match Reports 2005 Laleham 9th April (Lost 4-2) The weather was chilly but reasonable compared to the gales earlier in the week. The course has looked better with the fairways short of growth and the greens a bit patchy, although they played a lot better than they looked. We were holding our own after the first 4 pairs before Laleham pulled through with 2 wins at the end. Our opposition chose the US Ryder cup approach with a very strong last pairing which was tough luck on Bob McSorley & Stuart Herdman. Our only win of the day went to the normally reliable Uncle Dave Burton and Richard Collard, however this time the 4&3 win was entirely due to Richard Laleham not only won the match but all three nearest the pin holes, mind you it helps if your Captain tells you there is a nearest the pin competition. The day was completed with the traditional port toast out of the Billy White Trophy and some hilarious jokes from our hosts. Gatwick 14th April (Lost 9-3) The match was played over 36 holes of matchplay pairs at Betchworth, which was in excellent condition so early in the season. The weather was a bit damp but not bad enough to effect the play of a very strong LGW team. In 2003 we beat them 9-3 and in 2004 they beat us 8-4 so it was really our turn to win. The problem was nobody told the opposition that. After the morning we were 5-1 down but not quite beaten. Pierre Hostein stepped in for Les Sibley in the afternoon due to an injury and he and Stan Knollman cruised to a 4-3 win. Was this the start of a dramatic turnaround. Sadly NO and although Dave Fielding and Roger Woof managed to reverse their morning defeat we finally lost the match by 9-3.Well done LGW. At least we did manage some nearest the pin prizes thanks to Jim Griffiths and Roger Woof Delta (Away) 17th/19th May (Lost 33-11) Assembling a team of 22 players in Atlanta required great ingenuity but was successfully accomplished with the only no-shows being Mike Robinson and Stan Knollmans golf clubs. A great week of golf and hospitality followed and there was no sign of the heavy rain of two years ago. This time it was hot and then hotter for the match at Rivers Edge, Orchard Hills and the Palmer Course at Whitewater. On these long tough courses Deltas low handicap golfers proved too good for what had looked to be a strong BA team. Three BA players deserve special mention. Gavin Bamberger won 2 of his 3 matches and Stan Knollman played very well even with borrowed clubs. Linda Rich also had a good match and was presented with a special trophy at the final dinner for her outstanding support for this event. The return journey for most people made the outward trip look like a picnic. It will be a topic of conversation for those who survived it for years to come and no doubt the rest of us will just have to grin and bear it. SAS 9th/10th June (Won 6-1) We usually have a close and very friendly match with SAS and this year we took them to Foxhills. A friendly round on the Bernhard Hunt Course was followed next day by the match on the Longcross Course. In the friendly Stableford Competition the top three were Richard Croxford 36 pts, Alistair Wisley 37 pts and the winner Mike Bannister on countback also with 37 pts. Weather conditions were perfect with the sun shining all day for the seven 4 ball matches. A mention must go to Pat O'Shea and Cedric D'Cruz for an amazing win 9-8. The overall match was one of the biggest wins we have ever had against SAS 5 wins and 2 halves. Ned 0'Shea kept up his no loss streak as he also won in CPH in 2004.To complete a fine day Brian Wright and Richard Croxford won the nearest the pin prizes. Welsh Triangular 8thJuly This competition against the two Welsh teams is a 10 a side match where each players individual Stableford score is added up to make the team total. The weather was lovely but ,as the fine Chippenham course had been set up for a County match two days before, there were lots of tricky pin positions on the fast greens. Scoring was very close and BA were just beaten for first place by Llantrisant. Richard Croxford who was standing in as captain for the injured Les was the best individual BA player finishing second overall with 39 points. British European 25thAugust (Draw 3-3) The weather was hot, humid and VERY windy so there were plenty of 350 yard drives with the wind behind. The Nigel Mansell course still posed quite a challenge with some of the narrowest fairways we have seen. Especially intimidating is the par 5 4th hole which is only about 60 feet wide at best with OOB on one side and a ditch and water on the other. Hardest hole was the 18th par 3 and 206 yards into the wind. Only 3 players got onto the green. Day two was a friendly Stableford round with FlyBe having the two best scores but the nearest the pin prizes went to Les Sibley and Michael Parker for BA Karlstejn September (Won 3-2) ITS THE KNOCK-OUT ! After a fine tournament with 41 entrants, the final of the 2005 Knockout Matchplay competition was played on 28th October at Wentworth between Halina Pinocy and John De Rebello. The heavy rain forecast mercifully abated so the match was played in pleasant conditions on the excellently maintained East Course. There was a one shot difference in handicaps, Halina (22) and John (23), so an evenly balanced contest was expected. John started off the sharper with Halina appearing a little nervous over the first few holes, so after 6 holes John was 3 up. On the East Course a refreshment hut comes into play between the 6 & 7 holes and this break did Halina power of good (or was it just some good Columbian caffeine in her coffee). She went on to par the next 4 holes in regulation and win 3 of them. The two finalists traded blows for the next few holes and as often happens in matchplay there is a crucial hole, this turned out to be the 16th as the match was all square at that point. John was in trouble off the tee, Halina was in good position however even with a shot advantage ( 16th is a par 5 for Ladies and par 4 for Gents), Halina didnt complete the hole so well and John went 1 up. At the next hole, par 3 17th, John hit a good tee shot but Halina was wayward, so John became the 2005 Knockout winner with a 2 & 1 victory. The pair played a very good standard of golf, both ending up with stableford scores approximating to 36 (their handicaps) on a tough, unfamiliar course. 2006 Events DAY MEETINGSMATCHESFlackwell Heath (18 holes) 23 MarchGatwick (36 holes) 13 AprilBurhill Golf Club (27 holes) 19 AprilLaleham (18 holes) 29 AprilReading (36 holes) 23 MayDelta (home) 9/10/11 MayTo be announced w/c 19 JuneSAS (away) 8/9 JuneBetchworth (Pairs) 13 JulyWelsh Triangular 7 JulyFoxhills w/c 14 AugustBritish European Late AugustOak Park w/c 4 SeptemberKarlstejn (Away) Mid SeptemberLaleham w/c 11 DecemberAer Lingus (Home) Late September We propose to hold informal roll-up events over 18 holes at the beginning of May, June, July and August.
