2008 Matchplay Championship

Final - Wentworth, 22nd October Winner 2008 - Surinder Kalsi Once again we were able to secure the Edinburgh course at Wentworth for the BA Golf Section Matchplay Knockout Final on 22nd October. A glorious sunny Autumn day ensured a special day for the Finalists, Ian Forde (18) and Surinder Kalsi (21). There was a light wind which was only evident on the few holes that are not enclosed by trees. The Edinburgh course is long ( over 6,500 yards off the yellow tee markers ) and as might be expected in excellent condition, so it was a very good test for our finalists.
|
| Both golfers started off steadily with Surinder getting an early 2 hole lead which Ian pegged back, but a run of 3 pars in 4 holes upto the half way hut by Surinder meant he took a 3 hole lead into the back nine. The short break and refeshments worked for Ian as his golf improved and his comeback started at the 10th and this continued through to the 15th which saw Ian go 1 up. Surinder gained a par at the par 5 - 16th to square the match, both players then pared the delightful 17th, a par 3 over water. So winner takes all down the last which is a long par 4. As it turned out Surinder's nerve held as his winning putt was the last stroke of the match. This was the closest final for many years and so a fitting end to a very tight game played in the best of spirits. |
